The collection includes extraordinary groupings of sculpture, pottery, china, engravings, illustrations, metalwork, paintings, textiles, period costumes and furniture. Upstairs, on level 3, the V&A’s new Photography Centre, which opened in 2018, displays artworks and artefacts tracing photography from its invention to the present day. On the far side of the John Madejski Garden are the spectacular Arts and Crafts-designed Morris, Gamble and Poynter rooms, with their stained glass and Minton tiles. Originally designed as the museum’s refreshment rooms, they have been restored to their intended function as a delightful café. Sitting alongside the Henry Cole Wing on Exhibition Road, the grand porticoed Blavatnik Hall, designed by London-based architect Amanda Levete, was added in 2017. It includes the subterranean Sainsbury Gallery for temporary exhibitions and a porcelain-tiled courtyard and café.
